Do you ever miss yourself? How to create depth within yourself.

Every few days (sometimes daily depending on what season I am in), I start my day with pulling a card from a tarot or oracle deck.

I've done this for years and I love this practice, because it ads an element of playfulness, depth, and inner aliveness to my life.

What I have found is that many of us crave depth and a close connection to ourselves… many of you “miss yourselves”… but, as you likely well know, our daily lives get so busy that we often stay on the surface, unsure how we can “drop in" and hear ourselves clearly.

We are in survival mode and if we miss the exit sign, we drift further and further away from that precious intimacy with ourselves… eventually unsure how we can return to a solid connection to self.

But here's the thing: real, authentic thriving requires depth.

It requires a sense of closeness to yourself.

It needs that intuitive voice that not only keeps you on track, but keeps you healthy.

Do you ever wonder if the purpose of so many of our modern mental and physical challenges like depression, anxiety, burn out, PMS/ PMDD amongst others are all really our body's attempts to slow us down and make us actually feel and listen?

What if pain was just our body's attempt at re-connection?

Personally, through my own experiences (herniated disks and hormonal imbalances in my 20s, and migraines more recently), I have come to understand my body's symptoms as my closest ally.

When you are in pain, your body is simply trying to communicate something to you.

It has your best interest in mind –always.

And, it's your job to listen.

Whether you're in pain at this very moment or not, cultivating depth with yourself is one of the most beautiful and most foundational gifts you can give yourself in order to truly thrive.

It's when you can actually hear your inner voice that your life, your decisions and choices, your desires, hopes and dreams become clear and obvious.

When you can hear your inner voice clearly, you can step into an aligned sort of focus that doesn't allow outside noise to question who you are and what you are meant to do.

Confusion about who you are, your worth, your purpose and value in this world are painful burdens to carry… and they are not necessary. They are merely a symptom of disconnection with yourself.

So let me ask you:

  • When you really listen, what do you hear?

  • What's your inner voice trying to communicate to you about your path, your purpose, your desires?

If you are experiencing symptoms of some kind, ask yourself:

  • What are my symptoms forcing me to do?

  • What are they preventing me from doing?

If you really want to “drop into” these questions and hear your inner voice more clearly, I recommend the following:

  1. Limit your exposure to social media/ news/ phones for at least 2 days (ideally longer) and let your “social world” become really quiet.

  2. Take 10 minutes every day to write freely aka. just let whatever wants to come out, come out. No self-editing. Just let it spill.

  3. Create a soothing environment that invites your inner world to emerge. (ex. light candles, play calm music, go on solo nature walks, wear pastel colors and loose fitting clothes, bring home fresh flowers.)

And only then, journal on the above questions and see what comes up.

Personally, I have recently been hearing a lot of “I want to do really great work quietly.”

I am not surprised by this message.

I have known for some time that the noise and endless nature of our ever more virtual world is taking a toll on my nervous system and I am starting to see that my migraines are a way that my body is forcing me to disconnect from screens and go into quiet mode.

My migraines are reminding me that in order for me to do my best work, to feel creative, alive and grounded in who I am and the work I am meant to do, I have to implement clear boundaries with how much virtual noise I expose myself to.

So, here is to hearing and honoring the messages we receive!

Here is to cultivating intentional lives with a solid connection to self.

Love as always,

Caroline
